You can’t go anywhere outdoors without seeing ants on the ground or other surfaces. Thousands of ant species crawl along the planet every day, and a few species make their home right here in Connecticut. Sometimes ants come indoors and look for food and water; they might even stay longer if they like what they’ve found. Tim’s Pest Control has the scoop on some of the more common ants that you can find here at home.
Three Common Ants In Connecticut
Pavement Ants
Pavement ants measure about a quarter inch in length and have brown to black coloring. They prefer to nest underneath sidewalks and driveways as well as patios and decks. These ants will also reside near your home’s foundation and get into the kitchen through cracks and crevices. They enjoy sweet foods and will also munch on trash and crumbs.
Carpenter Ants
Carpenter ants measure between 1/4 and 1/2 inch in length. They mostly have black bodies but may also have reddish black or brown coloring depending on the species. These ants are carpenters of the ant world, burrowing holes into wood for their nests. Though they’re not as destructive as termites, carpenter ants will cause unsightly holes in your decks and other wooden structures.
Little Black Ants
Little black ants only grow to about 1.5 millimeters in length and have black bodies. They swarm in groups and form lines to meals. These ants prefer to live outdoors in woodwork or crevices in masonry, but they’ll come indoors if they locate food or water. If you see little black ants in your home, it could be a sign of a serious infestation nearby.
