What to Do About Stinging Insects

The fear of stinging insects grips most of us when one is suddenly buzzing around the can of soda we are holding. Bees, wasps and hornets present a challenging problem to backyard activities. What can you do about stinging insects on your property?

Be Cautious

You may want to track down the nest of that stinging pest as soon as one flies in your front door, but you should proceed with caution. A person can develop a severe allergy to bee and wasp stings without warning. Even if you have been stung before with only temporary pain, be aware of the symptoms of Anaphylaxis. Symptoms may appear up to 30 minutes after a sting.

The Mayo Clinic instructs you to call 911 if a sting victim shows any of these signs:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of the lips, eyelids or throat
  • Dizziness, faintness or confusion
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Hive
  • Nausea, cramps or vomiting

Inspect the Area

It can be very difficult to find a nest of bees, wasps, or yellow jackets. They prefer shaded areas under cover. Nests are often found under eaves, in trees, in the corners of playground equipment, inside spare tires, behind shutters and even in the ground. If you have insect activity, observe them from a distance in the late afternoon, and watch where they fly. This should give you an idea of where their nest is.

Wear Protective Clothing

If you are attempting to exterminate a colony yourself, make sure you wear the right clothes for the job. Wear light-colored clothing: long sleeve shirt, tuck your long pants into your socks and wear a hat. Long, heavy gloves are also recommended. If you are spraying a nest, do so just after nightfall when all the wasps or hornets are inside for the night. Make sure you stand upwind of the nest when spraying. Carefully read the instructions before using a wasp and hornet spray. Knock the nest down 24 hours after spraying it.

Leave the Bees

Honey bees with an outdoor hive will rarely cause you problems. They are docile and beneficial. Allow bees to pollinate your flowers and vegetables. Avoid wearing perfumes and scented body lotions when you will be in the yard. If you need to remove a honey bee hive, please call a local beekeeper. They have the skills and tools to remove the hive intact to save those precious pollinators.
