Bed Bugs 101

The bane of good sleep, the lurking terror of second-hand furniture and the silent fear of going to a motel: bed bugs! Bed bugs are one of the most hated pests and for a good reason. They can disrupt your sleep, ruin your furniture and steal your peace of mind. At Tim’s Pest Control, we have dealt with many bed bug infestations. Here are the basic things you need to know about bed bugs:

Bed Bug Appearance

Bed bugs are extremely small….only 4-5 millimeters long. They are almost impossible to see with the naked eye. Bed bugs are light tan to orange in color, except when they molt when they are white. They will have a red spot of color on them if they have recently been feeding. They do not have wings, and typically hide in soft furniture like beds, couches, and chairs.

Bed Bug Symptoms

Since they are usually too small to see, how can you know if you have bed bugs? Bed bugs feed on human blood, usually during the night while you sleep. If you wake up with red rashes or itchy bites, there is a good chance you have bed bugs. You may notice blood stains on your sheets where the bugs have bitten you. Bed bugs also leave behind dark spots of excrement on your bedding and nearby walls. They will also leave behind egg shells and shed their skin in bedding and mattresses. If you smell a musty odor, that is also a sign of bed bugs.

How to Prevent Bed Bugs

Bed bugs travel from place to place on humans or in clothing or furniture. Be very careful about buying furniture or beds from thrift stores or any second-hand stores. They can contain bed bugs which will contaminate your whole house. If furniture is heavily infested, you are often better off getting rid of it altogether.
